This blog is geared toward helping Independently Owned Specialty Retailers grow their business — or “Indies” as we like to call them. As Marketers, Merchandisers, Salespeople employed in the pet industry by Kyjen, we work with individual Specialty Retailers from across the globe on a daily basis. We thought, “Why not create a blog to pass along our experiences to other Independent Retailers.” Although our focus is primarily the pet industry, we feel the content is relevant to any specialty.

New Chew Toy, Unlike Any Other
Introducing a revolutionary boredom buster
Combine a dog’s natural drive to chew with a problem-solving challenge and you have the most revolutionary boredom buster of all time – Seamsters! We’ve designed a rubber toy in which dogs are actually interested! Long, thin strips of rawhide are threaded through deep, reinforced slotted holes in the rubber shells. The dried and hardened rawhide becomes a tough seam that challenges a dog to “destroy” it.
Constructive chewing is IN, destructive chewing is OUT
Dogs of all ages need to chew. If not given the proper outlet, destructive chewing can result. Seamsters provide a longer-lasting, challenging outlet for a dog’s natural chewing drive. Both wild and domestic dogs spend hours chewing to keep their jaws strong and their teeth clean.
Non-toxic, natural rubber and knot-free rawhide
Made of vanilla-scented, natural, non-toxic rubber and stitched with thin, knot-free strips of rawhide, these puzzles will provide hours of distraction. The rawhide strips are digestion-friendly – no need to worry about rawhide knots or large awkward-shaped pieces that might choke a dog. The entire package is irradiated for an extra dose of safety. Consumers wet the rawhide for just a few minutes. After rethreading the toy, they let it dry and harden – then the fun begins again!

Mouthfuls: Good Displays. Great Stuff. Sensational Specialty Retailer!
I’m in Mouthfuls every other week buying dog food since, as it turns out, feeding 300 pounds of retriever is no small feat! Milo, Macallan, O’Malley, and I give this place our biggest “paws up” rating.
Here’s why Mouthfuls rocks…
Atmosphere – Cozy neighborhood vibe… irresistible front window display, inviting atmosphere of abundance, great lighting, displays of varying heights arranged to draw customers through the store, just enough “departmentalization” to make products easy to find

These folks are wise enough, however, to cover all of the bases – they recognize the importance of community involvement and in-store events, such as photos with Santa.

Mike Iantosca has been working in the Pet Industry for over 15 years. His experiences includes 10 yrs at one of the largest pet specialty chains in the areas of marketing, product merchandising, assortment analysis and store layouts. In 2005, he became a sales broker representing some of the leading manufacturers in the pet industry. Mike took this experience to the Kyjen Company where he now is the VP of Key Accounts, with a focus on sales, marketing, and product development. He likes teaching independent retailers ways to grow their business through his knowledge and experiences.
